While we typically recommend waiting and measuring your puppy when you bring them home for the first time, we understand some prepared puppy owners like to have a harness ready for their pup on the day of pick up.
Here is a simple guide to understanding how to pick the best size based on an estimated weight range.
- Puppies that are 8-12 ibs on go-home day would likely be suited best with a size Extra Small.
- Puppies 12-25 lbs on go-home day would likely be suited best with a size Small.
But won't my puppy outgrow this harness?
Our philosophy is to start your puppy wearing a harness early. Young puppies can do much damage to their delicate throat and neck structures when pulling. When you start with a harness and build loose leash walking from day one, it’s possible that your pup won't need another harness when they out grow the first one.
Almost ALL dogs will grow out of their first harness, but fit their second harness for a lifetime. Often dogs are able to skip a size. For example, the size Extra Small may fit your puppy from 8-16 weeks of age, at which point they will ready for a size Medium which is likely to fit them for some time.
Giant breed puppies may work well in a size Small at 8 weeks and then skip to a Medium-Large which will fit them for quite some time if not a lifetime.
Ask your breeder what weight your puppy is likely to be on the day you pick up your new companion. Please note that the above weight recommendation is simply an estimate.
The likeliness your {pup type} will continue to grow and possibly grow out of his/her first harness is probable, yet with 6 different adjustment points on our Balance Harness you are able to adapt for those growth phases.
