How should the Balance Harness® fit my dog, and how can I adjust it for the best fit?
The Balance Harness® is designed to fit like a comfortable “necklace” across your dog’s chest — lower than a traditional collar — to avoid pressure on the trachea and to allow natural movement.
How to Check Your Dog’s Balance Harness Fit:
- The neck loop should sit lower on the neck, not high like a collar.
- The girth (belly) strap should sit at least 2 inches behind the front legs to prevent rubbing or chafing. However, you don’t want the girth strap placed behind the rib cage — it should wrap around the widest part of the rib cage for the most secure and comfortable fit.
- Allow a little slack in the chest strap so your dog can comfortably look upward without feeling restricted.
- If the harness shifts forward when your dog moves, loosen the belly strap slightly to allow for better range of motion.
- Some side shifting is normal during walks — this ensures full shoulder freedom.
- If the harness twists or moves too much, use a double-ended leash (like our Multi-Function Leash) to balance leash pressure from both the front and back attachment points.
Additional Fit Checklist:
- Is the front leash attachment point resting near the bony part of your dog's chest?
If it’s too high, it may cause coughing when your dog pulls. If it’s too low, the neck loop may rotate excessively. - Is the girth strap fitted around the ribcage?
If it's too far forward, it can cause chafing in the armpits. If it's too far back, it may press on the softer part of your dog’s belly or abdomen. - Does your dog appear comfortable?
If your dog immediately tries to chew at the straps, bites at the harness during walks, or refuses to move, these are signs that the harness may need adjustment. - Do you feel in control of your dog?
Be sure the girth strap is snug enough that your dog can’t slip out during walks.
Pro Tip:
Our straps are made of durable, high-quality nylon that may feel stiff at first but will soften quickly with regular use.
