We know sizing can be a bit of a puzzle, especially when your dog’s girth measurement overlaps two size ranges. This guide is designed to help you choose the best size for a secure, comfortable fit.
Start with the Girth
The Balance Harness® is sized based on your dog’s girth, measured around the widest part of their chest, about 2–3 inches behind the front legs.
-
Use a soft measuring tape or a piece of string and a ruler for accuracy.
-
Compare your measurement to our Balance Harness® Sizing Chart or Reflective Balance Harness® Sizing Chart.
These charts are also linked on every Balance Harness® product page.
Choosing Between Sizes
When your dog falls between two sizes, the key is to pick the size that allows for the most adjustability, ideally, where your dog lands in the middle of the harness’s adjustment range, rather than at the tightest or loosest end.
If your dog is fully grown:
-
If their girth is in the top inch of a size range, size up to ensure a comfortable, flexible fit with room for movement.
-
If their girth is in the bottom inch of a size range, size down to avoid a loose or gapping fit.
-
A centered fit within the adjustment range gives the best combination of comfort, control, and security.
Example: 24-inch Girth
Let’s say your dog’s chest measures 24 inches around:
-
Small size expands to a maximum of about 25.5 inches. That fit would be snug with minimal room to adjust.
-
Medium size tightens down to roughly 21 inches, making 24 inches a mid-range fit—ideal for comfort and customizability.
-
Medium/Large would likely be too loose unless your dog is significantly larger in other areas, such as broader shoulders or heavier weight.
Tip for Larger Dogs or Strong Pullers
For dogs over 50 pounds or those who tend to pull on leash, we often recommend the Medium/Large size. The wider webbing helps distribute pressure more evenly, offering greater comfort during walks or training sessions.
